چکیده

The spectra of the quiescent counterparts to the Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters SGR 1900+14 and SGR 1806–20 peak in the infrared. Their infrared spectra appear to contain several components: the photospheric emission from star(s) dominates at shorter wavelengths, a bright point source dominates at 25 μm, while an extended source dominates at 60 μm. However, we show here that these counterparts were not detected by the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope at 450 μm or 800 μm. These observations are consistent with other millimeter studies, and are consistent with the detection of a point-like “core” to the radio nebula of SGR 1806–20. We show that monoenergetic synchrotron radiation and black body spectra are too broad to be consistent with both the infrared and submillimeter observations. However, simple dust models can explain the combined observations.

XMM – Newton observations of Soft Gamma - ray Repeaters

All the confirmed Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters have been observed with the EPIC instrument on the XMM– Newton satellite. We review the results obtained in these observations, providing the most accurate spectra on the persistent X-ray emission in the 1–10 keV range for these objects, and discuss them in the context of the magnetar interpretation.

Four Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) have now been identified with certainty, and a fifth has possibly been detected. I will review their X-ray and gamma-ray properties in both outburst and quiescence. The magnetar model accounts fairly well for the observations of SGR1806-20 and SGR1900+14, but data are still lacking for SGR1627-41 and SGR0525-66. The locations of the SGRs with respect to their su...

Nature of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

I summarize recent developments in the magnetar model of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, give a critical inventory of alternative models for the AXPs, and outline the improved diagnostics expected from present observational efforts.

Testing the Fireball/blastwave Model by Monitoring Afterglows from Soft Gamma Repeaters

The popular fireball/blastwave model of classical γ-ray bursts is applied to soft γ-ray bursts. It is found that X-ray afterglows from strong events may be above their quiescent levels for 40 − 400 seconds. Optical afterglows may also be detectable. By monitoring the three repeaters, we will have an ideal way to check the fireball/blastwave model.

An Approach to Explain the Long Cooling Times of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma Repeaters with the Neutrino Magnetic Moment

We present a simple approach to understand the effect of neutrino magnetic moment on neutron star cooling. We find that a neutrino magnetic moment less than (0.2×10−12−8.5×10−10)μB is enough to explain the longer cooling times of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma repeaters compared to ordinary neutron stars.
